Carol Costante was Maryland's representative on the NASN Board from 1991-1995, NASN President 1996-1997, Maryland School Nurse Administrator of the Year 2001-2002 and National School Nurse Administrator of the Year for 2002-2003!

Requirements for application include:
1. An RN actively employed in school nursing
2. First time attendee at a NASN conference
3. Must be a member of NASN/MASHN
4. Must be willing to share information obtained at the
conference. This may be done via an article for the MASHN newsletter,
display for the Fall meeting, etc.

Guidelines and Criteria

Purpose: To publicly recognize school nurses statewide by annually honoring one school nurse who demonstrates excellence in school nursing practice and leadership in school health. The selected Maryland School Nurse of the Year will be the Maryland applicant for consideration as the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) School Nurse of the Year. 

Sponsor: May be any individual (except a member of the family) or a group (e.g. county school nurse association) who is familiar with the nurse as a practicing professional.

Eligibility:  

  1. More than one (1) nominee may be submitted from each school district.  

  2. Nominee must be: a registered professional nurse a member of MASHN/NASN for the current and past TWO years 

  3. Nominee must have FIVE (5) years experience as a school nurse and currently practice full time as a school nurse.

  4.  Full time shall mean working the full position that is available. If the only school nurse position in that community involves fewer hours than usual full time, it will be considered full time for the purposes of this eligibility criterion. More than fifty percent (50%) of nominee’s time must be spent in direct care. 

  5. Nominee may not be on the Board of Directors of NASN or an officer of NASN. 

  6. Evidence of excellence in school nursing practice must be presented based on NASN Standards of Professional  School Nursing Practice (1998). Please refer to Criteria for Selection on pages 21-3 to 21-9.

May be any individual (except a member of the family) or a group e.g. county school nurse association) who is familiar with the nurse as a practicing professional. 

Eligibility: More than one (1) nominee may be submitted from each school district. 

  1. Nominee must: be a registered professional nurse have a Bachelor Degree (or higher)

  2. Be a current member of MASHN be a member of NASN for the current and preceding FIVE years. 

  3. Nominee must have completed FIVE (5)years experience in school health and currently practice full time and have as their main responsibility the supervision, administration, and coordination of nursing service and hea1th programs. 

  4. Nominee may not be on the Board of Directors of NASN or an officer of NASN at the time of nomination. Evidence of excellence in school nursing practice must be presented based on Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators, (American Nurses Association,1996).
